CCL: Los Angeles Galaxy Can’t Find the Back of the Net in 0-0 Draw Against Puerto Rico: Fan Reaction
On September 19, the Los Angeles Galaxy battled to a 0-0 draw against the Puerto Rico Islanders at Estadio Juan Ramón Loubriel. Unable to find the back of the net in this CONCACAF Champions League match, L.A. failed to take home three important points. However, thanks to Brian Perk's incredible saves, they did earn another shutout and eliminated Puerto Rico from the competition. Here are my thoughts on the match.
Our Offense Was Lackluster
Bruce Arena decided to leave Robbie Keane, David Beckham and Mike Magee at home. Landon Donovan stayed on the bench for 60 minutes. Instead, the starting lineup consisted of Edson Buddle and Pat Noonan up top. Younger players like Jose Villarreal, Rafael Garcia and Kenney Walker occupied the midfield. Unlike the last meeting against the Islanders when we scored four goals at the Home Depot Center, we were unable to generate any attacking momentum in the first half. Yet, the second half was better. Kenney Walker almost scored in the 49th minute. In the 65th minute, Landon Donovan had a good opportunity to score off a set-piece. I have to admit the last 20 minutes were pretty exciting. Juninho had a good chance in the 80th minute but his shot hit the side-netting.
Perk "Saved" Us
Josh Saunders was another starter that didn't travel to Puerto Rico. Second string keeper Brian Perk has come up big before and he did it again tonight. Perk had seven saves. One of the most notable was his 7th minute, one-on-one save against Nicholas Addlery. Towards the end of the game, Perk denied shots from Noah Delgado and Joseph Marrero.
We are Still in This
The Galaxy will travel to play Isidro Metapán in the final CCL group stage game on October 25. Currently, we have seven points and are the leaders in Group 5. Metapán have three points. Yet, there's one catch: the Salvadorans have two games left while we only have one. Metapán still has to play Puerto Rico before facing the Galaxy in El Salavador. Although we defeated Metapán 5-2 in our CCL group stage opener, it's likely this road game will be tougher.
It's too bad we didn't take all three points in this match. Maybe Arena will bring more starters to our CCL group stage finale.
